Family Shepherds

Darrin Patrick has said that there is a “man crisis” in today’s church. One could argue that this is a consistent theme among God’s people, and humanity in general, beginning with Adam. Mark Driscoll has said that in becoming a Christian, particularly for men, we must put forth an effort to be like Jesus and not like our earthly father Adam. While both of these statements ring true, it has left me with a question of how men are to step up and do what we can to resolve this “man crisis” by being more like Jesus and less like Adam. This is why I am incredibly grateful for Pastor Voddie Baucham’s latest book, Family Shepherds: Calling and Equipping Men to Lead Their Homes, which Crossway books was kind enough to send me as part of their book review program.

Fearsome Grace

I just recently became acquainted with Preston Yancey’s blog through A Deeper Story when my step-dad emailed me a link to one of Preston’s stories. It took about ten seconds for me to add both blogs to my RSS feed. After Preston posted a preview of his Advent eBook, This Fearsome Thing of Grace, I was ecstatic when he announced that he wanted bloggers to review it. Preston was gracious enough to send me a free copy of the eBook for review purposes, and it has been my joy to read it, and I pray that I do his brilliant work justice as I write.

Reviewing The Voice NT

Once again, I’ve received another book to review from BookSneeze. This one was a little more interesting to me, and hopefully to you, because it’s a new translation of the Bible called The Voice.

No Additives

I applied to the Crossway Books review program last month, and was graciously accepted. I have been waiting for Pastor Tullian Tchividjian’s newest book, Jesus + Nothing = Everything, to come out for MONTHS! It was recently released, and I was ecstatic when I saw that this book was available to review.

Temptation and the Triumph of Christ

Like I said yesterday, I like Russell Moore. I liked him when I heard him speak at Criswell College some years ago. And I’ve followed his blog for some time now. I just finished reading his latest book, Tempted and Tried: Temptation and the Triumph of Christ, and I am absolutely blown away.

The Grace of God

In The Grace of God, Andy Stanley does an amazing job covering the various aspects of God’s grace in Scripture, and how it applies to our lives. Stanley shows us how the fact that we were even created is a sign of God’s grace. He discusses God’s grace after The Fall, throughout Israel’s formation and history, and how Jesus is the ultimate expression of The Grace of God.

Identity Confusion

We live in a world of confusion. We may not always be walking around scratching our heads wondering “What’s going on?”, but we live in a world where most people have a seemingly infinite number of options for school, a career, and where to live. Add the current economic condition on top of that, and it makes it even harder to decide what to do. It’s annoying, and it’s confusing. Yet, in the midst of all of this confusion, one thing is painfully clear: We have forgotten who we are.

Live Sent: Moved To Action

Contemplation
For those new to the blog, I’ve been reading Jason Dukes’ new book, Live Sent. As I’ve been reading, I’ve been posting some of my reflections. One of those reflections was partially in response to a FB event to picket the Rick Perry prayer rally happening on August 6th. With this particular post being so controversial in nature, it drew some comments from the person organizing the picket. As I typed out my response to the first comments, I kept feeling like words weren’t enough.

Live Sent: Gospel Contextualization

A friend of mine who is the Women’s Director of Living Hope recently gave a presentation on the Roots of Male and Female Homosexuality to some of my friends from The Village. In this talk, she said something that really started me down a path of much contemplation and self-evaluation: Homosexuality and gender issues is THE issue of our generation.

Teach Young People Gospel Theologizing

What is Gospel Theologizing?
Pastor and author Tim Keller spoke of Gospel Theologizing in his message “The Supremacy of Christ and the Gospel in a Postmodern World” at the 2006 Desiring God National Conference. One of the things he pointed out was that when he grew up there was this apparent distinction between the Gospel and Theology. There was this mentality that all Christians need to know the gospel – that God loves us, sent Jesus to die on the cross and raise again to conquer sin and death and forgive us of sin, and that He’s coming back some day – and then Theology was like a level of knowing about God that was really only for pastors or Bible professors.
