A while ago, I started being more authentic on the blog, and joined Joy, a writer I’ve come to know and respect, in sharing about life: unmasked, in which I share some of my struggles, questions, and failures. I’ve been going to The Porch at Watermark with my cousin off and on for a while, and I’ve been curious to see how their Sunday service flows in comparison. So, I decided to visit Watermark this weekend to check it out. Honestly, part of my curiosity was because at The Porch they offer solid teaching, but it seems to be sensitive toward unbelievers and new believers. There isn’t anything wrong with that, I just wanted to know if that’s how Sunday morning went or if the gospel came across more explicit. Not only did I get my answer, I also walked out with a gut check with a side of conviction.

Whether you’ve grown up going to church in the buckle of the Bible Belt, are new to the Christian faith, or have simply been around church for any length of time, either you or someone you know has asked the question “Why do we need to confess our sin?”. Some may phrase it “Why do we need to ask forgiveness for sins when Christ already paid the price on the cross for all sins; past, present, and future?” Is this like an ATM type of thing, where the money is there, but we don’t get the cash until we swipe the card and withdraw from an unlimited supply of grace? Is confession something we have to do to get God to apply His grace to our lives?

When we think about suffering, we are prone to think about how bad it feels, to become inward focused, to ask “Why me?”. When we actually experience suffering, we flesh out the values that we really hold to be true: whether we really believe that God is of first importance, or if we naively believe that the world should revolve around us. We rarely ever stop to think about anything outside of ourselves. We often don’t stop to realize there’s a bigger picture, and a purpose behind the pain.

Well, Rob Bell certainly stirred up a lot of commotion very quickly with his promo video for, and the release of, his book, Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived. The conversations and blogs about his book, and the topic of Universalism overall, exploded overnight, and then seem to have died out just as quickly. Pastor David Platt, author of Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, offers a different perspective, and a strong challenge to those who profess Christ as Lord, Savior, and Treasure.
