The Waiting

Four hundred years. Four hundred years of silence. Four hundred years waiting to hear from God. Waiting for a sign. Waiting for a prophet. Waiting for something.

Waiting.

And waiting.

And waiting.

Generation after generation. Waiting for words from God. For direction. For manifest presence. For the God who parted the sea for Moses and sent down fire from Heaven for Elijah. For the living God who performed the miracles of old to speak yet again. Living in the silence must have been agonizing. Longing for God to appear. Day after day. Year after year. Decade after decade. Hope set fully on the coming Messiah. Groaning along with creation. Longing for redemption. Expecting a Savior. Expecting a King!

The Freeing Weight of Sacrifice

Usually Christmas just annoys me. Yep, I said it. It’s not just the secular consumerism, it’s the way Church treats Christmas, too. I usually just try to keep my head down and make it through until January when sanity is restored and all that is good and right returns. But this year was different.

This Christmas…

I got nothing. I wanted to write some compelling narrative about the Christmas story, or teach some profound truth. But I have nothing. For reasons unknown, this has been a week of not feeling the nearness of the Holy Spirit. This has been a time of busyness at work, focusing on a relationship and how to best make it a Gospel-centered and Christ-exalting one, and trying to move to make life easier and to be a better steward. So, I’ve got nothing.

Fearsome Grace

I just recently became acquainted with Preston Yancey’s blog through A Deeper Story when my step-dad emailed me a link to one of Preston’s stories. It took about ten seconds for me to add both blogs to my RSS feed. After Preston posted a preview of his Advent eBook, This Fearsome Thing of Grace, I was ecstatic when he announced that he wanted bloggers to review it. Preston was gracious enough to send me a free copy of the eBook for review purposes, and it has been my joy to read it, and I pray that I do his brilliant work justice as I write.
